Assessment #8

This student clearly met the learning objectives.  The student had very indepth ideas about the learning process and the learning community.

The learning process in an online classroom is unlimited!  From the video, Traveling Techies: Online vs. Traditional Classroom , there are differences in an online classroom and a traditional classroom.   Here are the major differences:
In an online classroom, learning is convenient.  Traditional learning offers rigid schedules that learners have to work around.  Digital learning offers flexibility so learners can work on their own time and at their own pace. Traditional classrooms limit discussion to the time allotted for one particular class period.  The online environment gives participants the opportunity to engage in ongoing discussions and extend the conversation.    Traditional classrooms resort to textbooks and paper when completing projects.  The online environment provides opportunities to incorporate new technologies and promote creativity. Traditional classrooms only allow for teachers to talk to their students face to face.  Online teaching opens the doors to communicate by text, audio and/or video formats.  Traditional classes have a set time and schedule meaning communication is limited to that set time frame.  Communicating with online learners can take place at anytime because there is not a set class time frame.  Traditional classroom teachers often find themselves calling on the same students during class discussions.  In an online class all students have a voice and the ability to share their thoughts, opinions and ideas with everyone in the class.  Traditional classrooms allow students to access technology when it is convenient for the teacher.  Online classrooms immerse students in technology.  Traditional classrooms tend to use technology to drive home a teacher directed point.  Online classrooms use technology in ways that allow students to take control of their own learning.  Traditional classrooms restrict students use of technology by only allowing them to use teacher selected programs and sites.  Online classrooms offer students the freedom to gain and display newfound knowledge in new ways.
Building a community of learners is key in creating an effective online class.  Social presence is a must!  Social presence is the ability to portray oneself as a “real” person in the online environment.  Learning is an active process in which both the instructor and the learners participate in order to be successful.  In order for an online class to be successful, the instructor must facilitate the learning process, the learning process must be student-centered, and the instructor-student power shift must be balanced.   The students must feel comfortable in the online class and the teacher must maintain a student-friendly atmosphere, for the online class to be a success.
